-Rash of viral origin (Herpes Zoster Virus (HZV)).
-The condition is caused by a reactivation of the virus which caused chickenpox (often in childhood and hid again in the nerve roots)
-It follows the path of a nerve and presents as small vesicles.
-After an active episode of shingles, very invalidating pain can persist (postherpetic neuralgia)
