- Seborrheic Keratosis is the most common benign skin growth.
- These growths are primarily age related as at least one lesion is present in individuals 50 and over. However, they are also related to sunexposure. Indeed in a study comparing Australians and English individuals, seborrheic keratosis are sometimes present in teenagers in the former group !
- These lesions start as tan-coloured patches (lentigines, solar lentigo, sunspots, age spots), for example on the back of the hands and become darker, elevated and rough appearing.
- They can be localized on the whole body except the palms and soles.
- Because of their evolution they are often confused with cancerous skin growths when they reach later phases of growth. A dermatologist (skin doctor) will be able to make the difference and perform a biopsy in case of any doubt.
- To get rid of them, liquid nitrogen therapy (cryotherapy) is one of the treatment options.
