Cosmetic Treatments: “What Men Want”

Cosmetic concerns have preoccupied men and women but until this “men’s appearance concerns” were more accepted by today’s society, Aesthetic procedures (Cosmetic treatments) were limited to women. But with men now being more “self aware” it is important for treatment providers to know what are cosmetic defaults men want to be corrected, as a result of aging.

Study
-An online questionnaire was given to 600 esthetically-oriented men who had never undergone a cosmetic treatmment.
-They were aged between 30 and 65 (mean age 48).
-First they were asked to rate which facial features of them (15: forehead, glabellar, crow’s feet, marionette, and perioral lines; thinning eyelashes, tear troughs (under the eyes), nasolabial folds, oral commissures, double chin, chin, and jawline; and temple, mid-face, and lip volume loss) and the areas that they would choose first

Results
In decreasing order, the most bothersome features were tear troughs, double chin, crow’s feet lines, and forehead lines. There was a strong correlation between the facial features that bothered them the most and the areas of treatment priority (r2 = 0.81)
Crow’s feet and tear troughs were rated as the most likely to be treated first (each had 80% of first preferences) followed by forehead lines (74%), double chin (70%), glabellar lines (60%), oral commissures (55%), and chin (51%).
-In contrast, the less areas likely to be treated first were to be treated first were thinning eyelashes (14%), lip volume (15%), and perioral lines (23%).
-All other features were reported as bothersome by less than 10% of the men surveyed, and the features found to be least bothersome to male respondents were lip volume and perioral lines (both 3%).
-No differences were found between old and younger men.

Comment
It is important to be aware of what might trouble patients (men (both old and young) and what treatments they want to do – this leads to higher quality of service as patients don’t always express their concerns.
