Eccrine Gland (structure)

  • Eccrine Glands are the most frequent glands and are one type of sweat glands (the others are called apocrine glands).
  • They are located in the dermis, have a circonvoluted shape and the excretory canal drains sweat to a separate opening directly on the skin (epidermal) surface.
  • They are very numerous on the palms and soles and are responsible for “smelly feet”.
  • Sweat has a clear (serous) appearance and is secreted by the cells in the lumen of the excretory canal.
  • The glands are hyperactive in a condition called hyperhidrosis.
