Emulsifying ointment

This is an emollient which is used to moisturize dry skin. It may also be used as a soap substitute on problem skin with eczema or other skin rash which cannot tolerate over-drying toilet soaps. Your doctor has prescribed this for you as a :

  • Moisturizer

Apply it liberally to the affected areas, at least 2 times a day. A good time to apply this is just after your bath.

  • Bar soap: Wet the body. Rub some emulsifying ointment with warm water between your palms until it lathers, then apply it to the entire body, except your face and scalp. Wash off with water.
  • Liquid soap Scoop a spoonful into a flask. Add some hot water and whisk until the ointment melts. Add more cold water. Apply this liquid liberally to the entire body, except your face and scalp. Wash off with water.

Points To Note:

  • This is used not only to cleanse, but also to leave a thin film of ointment on the skin.
  • It may not be suitable for the face or scalp, as it may be too oily.
  • The elderly should be extra careful after using this ointment in the bath, as the floor may be oily and slippery

When in doubt, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
