Golgi Apparatus (structures contained in cells)

  • The Golgi Apparatus is an organelle (cell “organ”) which plays an important in the final processing of material before being liberated outside the cell* (secretion or exocytosis).
    • More precisely vesicles are imported from the Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum, their contents are liberated inside the lumen and then processed. They are then liberated in the form of vesicles by budding.
  • *Some vesicles contain enzymes and are sent within the cell to lysosomes: these allow digestion of material ingested by cells: for example material ingested by macrophages.
  • Hailey-Hailey disease, is a rare inherited blistering disease that may be caused by abnormal homeostasis of the Golgi Apparatus (To read more, click HERE). Hailey Hailey disease is also called Benign Familial Pemphigus.
