L-ascorbic acid (Vitamin C)

  • Is an antioxidant
  • Is used in the treatment of disorders of pigmentation including melasma (chloasma) (pregnancy mask)
  • Alters the color of melanin from jet black to light tan
  • Unstable as quickly oxidized
