Macrophage (cell)

  • Macrophages are cells derived from the bone marrow and are also called Histiocytes. “Macro” and “Phage” come from Greek words immediately telling us that these are big cells able to “eat” others (phagocytosis); they also participate in wound healing.
  • Precursors of Macrophages are called Monocytes.
  • These cells can be present anywhere in the skin. Langerhans Cell are modified macrophages.
  • Macrophages can accumulate in the dermis to form granulomas = foci of chronic inflammation in response to foreign bodies, infections (leprosy) but also in autoimmune (sarcoidosis) and idiopathic conditions (granuloma annulare). Macrophages are also present in cancerous disorders such as Langerhans Cells Histiocytosis (previously called Histiocytosis X)
