Melanoma in a few words

-Tumor originating in the pigment cells of the skin (melanocytes).
-Sunlight plays a major role in their development.
-Trauma might also be involved: especially in acral melanomas (see Bob Marley’s case of a melanoma on the feet apparently found after a trauma while playing soccer. To read more, click HERE)
-Genetic factors play a role and can increase the likelihood of developing melanoma,
-In redheads, pheomelanin replaces melanin and it easily generates procarcinogenic molecules called reactive oxygen species (ROS)
