- Merkel cells are cells located in the deep epidermis (close to eccrine sweat gland openings (ridges)).
- The cells communicate with free nerve endings and allow sensation of touch – they are also called Tactile receptors.
- They allow to discriminiate shapes and textures.
- Merkel Cells are involved in a rare but aggressive cancer called Merkel Cell Carcinoma.
- Note: the cell of origin is unknown but could be derived from the neural crest.
