Nucleus (structure)

  • The Nucleus is a structure contained within cells = organelle.
  • It occupies roughly 10% of the volume of a cell.
  • It contains the cells’ genetic material, DNA.
    • There are multiple DNA molecules assembled into structures called chromosomes.
  • Other structures are nucleoli, which are the production lines of ribosomes, which are the protein “factories” of cells.
  • Note: in the epidermis they disappear as the cells differentiate.
  • Note 2: There are plenty of other structures (Cajal bodies), enzymes (histones..)..but these will not be detailed here.
