Ribosome (protein)

  • Ribosomes are the protein producing “factories” of a cell.
  • They are structures attached to an intracellular organelle called the endoplasmic reticulum.
  • They are composed of 2 proteins (subunits) which fit to each other and are assembled inside the cell nucleus in a structures called nucleoli.
  • They synthesize proteins from a RNA code (messenger ARN) coming out of the cell = this process is called translation.
    • In more detail a 3 “letter” sequence of RNA “A – T -U” corresponds to a specific Amino Acid of a protein.
