Sebocyte (cell)

  • Sebocytes are the cells contained in the sebaceous glands.
  • They secrete an oily liquid (“oily skin”), called sebum. The secretion is under the regulation of androgen hormones and an excessive secretion plays an important role in the development of acne (acne vulgaris).
  • Sebaceous glands contain a few layers of sebocytes:
    • they differentiate toward the lumen of the gland by accumulating lipid droplets in the cytoplasm.
    • then they are wholly detached as they achieve full differentiation: this method of the whole cell dying off is called a “holocrine” secretion.
